Peace Out
Can we have community in the absence of cooperation?
Ok, let’s admit it…
We live in a somewhat diffused social network in which we are often encumbered by our efforts at multi-tasking. We make plans, set them in motion, and the next thing we know, we catch ourselves exclaiming, “Oh, my! I forgot about that.”
In an effort to assuage our frustration, we again commit to the plan and put it back in motion. It’s a process of starting – stopping – and starting again.
Historically, each and every one of us come from an ethnic heritage in which social accountability was woven into the very fabric of the system.
We had elders, sages, mentors…
We had guidance. In today’s world, in our multicultural assimilation, most of us have experienced an estrangement from our connection with those in which we share community. But that estrangement does not negate the fact that each of us needs guidance and support.
Whoever you are, whatever you do, wherever you live – reach out.
Find a group of people with whom you can belong. We need people to be both objectively and subjectively supportive of us.
People who will call us on our defects, help us to revise them, and encourage our growth. If you are trying to navigate this life alone, well then, you have a fool for a guide.
For as much as some of us may hope, rarely, if ever, are we in isolation from others. True “self-sufficiency” does not apply to anyone within our present age, regardless of belief, orientation, spiritual beliefs, or political persuasion.
Acknowledging such is just a beginning…
Growth occurs in the expansion of others – the willingness to reach out, to help, to cooperate.
Just what does that mean, cooperate? To co-operate – to engage in an activity or experience with others, toward an agreed-upon goal. So, the question again arises: Can we have community in the absence of cooperation?
Peace Out –
